Weeks 1 & 2

Week 1

-Location:1400 Republic Street -Property owners: Over-the-Rhine Community Housing (OTRCH)

-Type of property: Mixed use with 3 residential units (2 currently occupied) and approximately 700 Sq.Ft. of potential commercial space.

-Goal: to structurally stabilize and repair the space according to zoning and building code standards.

- Reinforce the failing joist system in the basement.

-Separate the residential units from the commercial unit by updating and adding fire ratings. Looking into removing the blocks and bricks that enclose the corner entrance of the store.

-Prevent further deterioration of the exterior brick and interior systems.

From first looks, it is evident that there is a lot of work to be done, but in order to get a clearer view of the scope of work ahead we need to clear out decades of stored items.  Since the space was covered wall to wall and floor to ceiling of valuable people's movement items (such as newspapers, flyers, documents and signs), we looked into sorting through the piles and securing them at a new location that would be referred to as the archive center for the People's Movement. While sorting through what was valuable in terms of saving for the archive space and what could be donated or recycled, I truly felt as if we were taking part in preserving history as well as learning just how important every little step was in the People's Movement (including or efforts to work with OTRCH to renovate their building in order for the People's movement to advance).
