Weeks 7 & 8

Week 7

Week 8

The bulk of the week we concentrated our time on preparing the basement to pour concrete. We began this process by marking where the footers would be located and from there began to dig out our footers. As expected we found a few conditions we had to adjust to while digging the footers, such as layer of brick flooring under the first layer of dirt and below that layers of clay and sand. The biggest things we had to adjust to was the fact that we found a few storm drains that ran through the holes of the footers in the basement. Our ultimate solution was shift and re-space the footers that would interrupt the the drains.

We began the week by weighing out the pros and cons of using LVL's or 2"x12" for the beams that will support the first floor joists. While 2"x12"'s seemed to a viable solution because the costs would be next to half the price of the LVL's, we decided that the LVL's would be the best solution for this project.  Ultimately, since the LVL's are engineered we would have more control over the outcome of the project due to its uniformity and its structural integrity would exceed that of a 2"x12".
