Week 9

Weeks 9 & 10

While letting the concrete footers cure we looked at re-documenting some items for our drawing sets such as the actual placement of the footers and their heights. In addition, after discussion of how we would level out our new floor system and the timeline of events, we came to the conclusion that the process to replace the floor would run smoother if we replaced all the joists.  This process we would ensure that we would would have more control over the outcome of the new floor by installing new 2"x12" joists and we would be able to salvage the existing joist  for the future use of the building owners. Meanwhile, a few students worked on proposals on  schemes for the corner entry and how the new entry could bring freshness to the building while respecting the historic aspects of the building and complying with building code.

Week 10

This week we looked further into the process of pouring our concrete footers. We started by re-caluclating the amount of concrete needed, and ordered the concrete from Ideal Solutions. Next, we re-visited the site to build wooden forms to pour the concrete footers in and placed reinforcing rebar in each footer. In preparation to pour the concrete flushed out a plan as to how we would move the concrete from the mixing truck to the basement by cutting a small hole in the floor with a funnel that would direct the flow of concrete to the basement. From there we would use wheelbarrows to move the concrete to each footer.
